The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 calls for urgent action to conserve our oceans
SDG 14 — adopted in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development — aims to prevent and reduce marine pollution, protect marine and coastal ecosystems, and ensure sustainable fishing practices globally.
Oceans cover over 70% of our planet. They regulate climate, produce half the oxygen we breathe, and support over 3 billion livelihoods worldwide. Yet today, over 90% of fish stocks are overexploited or fully exploited.
Since the Industrial Revolution, ocean temperatures have risen by 0.13°C per decade. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch — twice the size of Texas — formed over just 60 years of plastic use. The crisis is recent, and reversible.

From sunlit shallows to crushing abyssal depths — four worlds beneath the waves
Often called "rainforests of the sea," coral reefs occupy less than 1% of the ocean floor yet support 25% of all marine species. Built by tiny polyps over thousands of years, these living architectures provide shelter, breeding grounds, and feeding zones for an extraordinary diversity of life.
Over 230,000 known species inhabit our oceans — with millions yet to be discovered
From the tiny pygmy seahorse (2cm) to the massive whale shark (12m), fish display astonishing diversity. They are a primary protein source for 1 billion people globally. Over 1/3 of fish populations are currently overfished beyond sustainable levels.
Whales, dolphins, seals, and manatees evolved from land ancestors. Blue whales — the largest animals ever — communicate via infrasound across ocean basins. Today, 25% of marine mammal species face extinction threats from hunting, entanglement, and noise pollution.
Ancient mariners that have survived 100 million years are now critically endangered. Leatherback turtles can dive to 1,000m and travel 10,000km. All 7 species face threats: 6 are listed as threatened or endangered due to plastic ingestion, bycatch, and habitat loss.
Invisible to the naked eye yet indispensable. Phytoplankton produce over 50% of Earth's oxygen through photosynthesis. They form the base of virtually every marine food chain. Rising ocean temperatures and acidification are causing alarming declines in phytoplankton populations.
Apex predators that have shaped ocean ecosystems for 450 million years. Sharks regulate prey populations, maintaining the entire food web. Tragically, over 100 million sharks are killed annually, primarily for the fin trade. 1 in 4 shark species now faces extinction.
Neither plant nor rock — corals are living animals. Each coral polyp houses photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae in a symbiotic relationship. When stressed by heat or pollution, they expel the algae and "bleach." Since 1998, global bleaching events have devastated 50% of the Great Barrier Reef.
Human activity has pushed our oceans to a tipping point — the damage is real and accelerating
8 million tons of plastic enter the ocean every year. Microplastics have been found in the deepest ocean trenches and in human blood. Marine animals mistake plastic for food, leading to starvation and poisoning.
34% of global fish stocks are harvested at unsustainable levels. Ghost fishing by abandoned nets traps millions of marine animals annually. Destructive practices like bottom trawling devastate entire seafloor ecosystems in minutes.
Oceans have absorbed 90% of excess heat from global warming. Since 1900, sea levels have risen 20cm. Warm water triggers mass coral bleaching events. Melting ice caps alter ocean circulation patterns, affecting weather globally.
Since pre-industrial times, ocean acidity has increased by 26%. As CO₂ dissolves into seawater, it forms carbonic acid. This dissolves the calcium carbonate shells of oysters, mussels, and corals — threatening entire ecosystems at their foundation.
A single oil spill can devastate thousands of square miles of marine habitat. Oil coats seabirds and marine mammals, blocking UV protection, insulation, and buoyancy. Hydrocarbons contaminate the food chain for decades after the initial spill.
Underwater noise from shipping, sonar, and drilling disrupts whale communication and navigation, causing strandings. Artificial light near coastlines confuses sea turtle hatchlings, preventing them from reaching the ocean after hatching.
Every action counts — from global policy to personal choices
MPAs are the national parks of the ocean — zones where human activity is regulated to protect ecosystems. Currently, only 8% of the ocean is protected. Scientists advocate for 30% protection by 2030 (the "30×30" goal) to halt biodiversity collapse.
Switching to pole-and-line fishing, implementing catch quotas, and eliminating harmful subsidies to overfishing industries can allow stocks to recover. MSC-certified sustainable seafood gives consumers the power to drive change at the supermarket.
130+ countries have passed plastic legislation. The UN is developing a global plastics treaty. Innovations like biodegradable packaging, ocean cleanup systems, and deposit return schemes are already showing measurable impact on coastal pollution.
Restoring mangroves, seagrass beds, and salt marshes sequesters carbon while rebuilding coastal resilience. Blue carbon ecosystems can capture 5× more carbon than tropical forests per unit area, making them crucial climate allies.
